Perrysburg vs. Toledo
Everyone knew going into the match against the Toledo Celtics that it was going to be a good one. Last year Perrysburg played the Celtics twice and lost both times. It was humbling for the Jackets to lose and not advance deep into the playoffs. This year the Jackets had much to prove and they wanted some payback from 2013. Both teams came into the match ranked in the state. Perrysburg was sitting at 7th while the Celtics found themselves in 5th. Rugby Ohio knew there was a lot at stake in this first match of league play and voted it Ohio's game of the week.
From the kick, Perrysburg came out strong. It was quickly evident that Perrysburg's pack was going to be the deciding factor. The fitness level of Perrysburg's forwards was far superior to that of the Celtics. Several times Toledo elected not to scrum down against the Jackets in fear of losing possession. Perrysburg drew blood first from a spectacular run up the sideline from Junior Fullback Caleb Wotring. Senior Spencer Kluge converted the extra points with a great kick nearly on the touch line to put Perrysburg up 7-0. The rest of the half was a back and forth stalemate leaving it 7-0 at the whistle.
Both teams looked strong early in the 2nd half. Possession was about 50/50 and the Jackets and Celtics found themselves punishing each other with hard hits and strong running. Perrysburg's leading scorer, Dan Waltermeyer, manage to find the try zone yet again from some physical play in Toledo's defensive third. After a missed conversion Perrysburg was up 12-0. The Celtics weren't ready to roll over yet and managed to score a try on a strong run from their Inside Center. With the conversion it was 12-7 in favor of the Jackets. On the ensuing kickoff Perrysburg managed to drive down the field and Junior Scrumhalf Duncan Wesley scored on a broken play and Chris Labadie coverted the extra points to put the final nails in the coffin. Perrysburg end the game up 19-7.
