Perrysburg Girls Rugby – State Champs

Fall 7s Season

Perrysburg rugby club continues their year of growth as they embarked on their inaugural fall 7’s season, represented by 2 boys' teams and a girls’ team. 7’s rugby is an abbreviated version of the regular 15 person per team game. It's a high speed, high intensity 7 minutes per half action packed game, resulting in often high scores. The field is the same size but with less than half the number of players on it meaning there is a lot of ground to cover with tired legs and bodies afterwards.

The Perrysburg girls had 3 returning players from last spring season. However the mix of experience and 10 new players has been a successful one, finishing first in their division and being crowned State Champions yesterday. They finished the Season 7-1 on the road in Mentor, OH.

Rugby Ohio’s fall season is played across 4 weekends in a tournament style, 17 girls teams and 24 boys teams from across the state compete to be top of the table after week 4. Each team playing 8 games across the season.

The boys team with a few more retuning players represented an A & B team. The A-side finished 5-3, and the B-side 3-5, a lot of experienced was gained during the practices and games which we think will lead to a competitive Spring Season.

Rookie Rugby

In September we hosted an open clinic following the huge interest in rugby at Harrison Rally Days booth. 24 8th grade or younger kids came along to experience rugby for the first time. A great time was had by all learning the basics and playing flag rugby. We have enough interest to start a full program for this age group in spring, so stay tuned for more information.

Men's Rugby Team

Finally, we are working on finalizing a mens rugby team. Since the club has been in existence for so long we are now seeing old players move back into the local area. We want to be able to give them the opportunity to keep playing at the next level. This team will be headed up by Dan Ketterman, if you are interested in playing please contact him dan.ketterman@gmail.com
